Before I knew what an A&R was, I met the Buenos Aires quintessential underground A&R.
I first met Guillermo Canale aka DJ Nim while looking for new tunes for Diplo. The international beat detective himself had come into town for a show, was really interested in Cumbia, played a festival, hung out and then asked if I could help him find some new tracks. I set out to mine Buenos Aires for new music and Marcelo Rondinone eventually took me to Nim’s apartment. We immediately hit it off and he opened up his hard drive to a jackpot of new and exciting sounds. This was the first time I got hipped to Fauna, Princesa, Marcelo Fabian and strangely enough, dubstep.
We eventually would start collaborating together with his label, Bomboclap Records, and Whats Up Buenos Aires, promoting some of his artists and events. The dubstep mixtape he gave me made a solid rotation of plays at my office and eventually I had to book him for a back room party at a BAFICI party we threw. We made the backroom the dubtep room. DJ Nim owned it for 5 hours straight. He’s just that kind of DJ.
Fast forward to 5 years later, Villa Diamante joins the fun, Zizek Club is created, the laboratory of dance spawns ZZK Records, ZZK becomes global and Nim, the quietest and least visible of the 3 ZZK founders, (we all work 3 jobs to keep the dream alive) drops his first ZZK mixtape and gets ready for his first European tour, sharing the bill with Super Guachin.
With unreleased tracks by Frikstailers, Mati Zundel, Nim edits, trans-Atlantic collaborations (we met Jorge in Paris on a ZZK tour in 2009 and Nim collaborated with him with Sara Hebe), Fauna, Duo Calhambre and more, this mixtape has been on solid rotation at ZZKHQ and got me from my office to my apartment in a record 9 minutes on bike. Saboroso!
